| Budapest Opera Ball 2010 |
|
The greatest event of the Budapest Carnival season is organised again this year on 13th February. It has been a popular public event of Hungarian high society and their guests from all over the world for several years. This year the star guest José Cura and a sophisticated menu are going to delight guests. The history of the Opera Balls goes back to 1886 as it had been organized first that year and had become a tradition of Hungarian aristocracy. In 1934 the last ball was held and it was forgotten for six decades. In 1996 this outstanding social event was organized again. This time the leading persons of the middle class that is to say the Hungarian culture, knowledge, power and money met each other. Old traditions like the opening dance of a hundred debutant dancers were revived and modern traditions like inviting star guests were introduced. Among the star guests of the first ten years were Montserrat Caballé, Ornella Muti, Sascha Hehn, Y. Nesterenko, Walter Berry, Heinz Zednik, Katia Ricciarelli, Patrizio Buanne, Catherine Deneuve, Katarina Witt, Gina Lollobrigida and Daryl Hannah. Every year the menu is provided by a different Hungarian restaurant or catering service. This year it is basically Mediterranean style but the specialities of modern Hungarian cuisine are also presented. The ball is opened by more than a hundred debutante dancers after a short opera programme then comes the 'Alles Walzer' so that people dance till dawn. The music is played by various Hungarian orchestras and bands. Besides the theatre room, which is the biggest hall of the Opera House, smaller rooms are also open for the guests. The Zwack Café awaits guests with cocktails and jazz music, in the Törley Champagne Bar piano music is played - its terrace works as a Cigar Room this night. There is going to be also a brasserie, where jolly music is played all night. Charity has always had significance for the organizers thus the day after the ball 1000 handicapped and disadvantaged children take over the theatre hall and watch the opera performance Jack and Jill. Beforehand homeless people are invited for lunch in a public square of Buda. For those who have never been to this ball before it must be an unforgettable experience to take part in such a tradition.
