The idea of the national gallop came up three years ago when a Hungarian marketing guru, Péter Geszti decided to start a festival that celebrates the centuries-old Hussar traditions, gives a chance to Hungarian towns and villages to be represented and presents modern gastronomy as well. Thus in 2008 the first National Gallop was held with a lot of participants and a grand prize of HUF 30 million. Since then it has become a special horse race that “has a sense of history, building on Hungarian traditions, thus becoming a national cultural event that not only preserves traditions but at the same time creates new ones”. This year the National Gallop is organised between the 2nd and 6th of June on two venues, the Széchenyi racetrack (56-osok tere, behind the National Gallery) and Heroes’ Square. Before the grand derbies horse riding programmes and shows await the visitors. The event is accompanied with a program called “The kitchen of Hungary” that offers regional dishes from different areas of the country. The programs are free but VIP tickets are available if you wish to see the derbies from the grandstand.
